E2K7 - SCOM VersionBucket >1800/2000 - Problem with Data Collection Set
Hello, Server 2008 SP2 Exchange 2007 CCR dedicated Mailbox Servers SP1 RU9 Exchange 2007 Dedicated PF servers SP1 RU9 I've been working on an issue our helpdesk is getting lots of Version Bucket alerts for >1800 and then >2000. I turned on the "squeaky lobster" so that I would have access to the Version Bucket counters. http://msexchangeteam.com/archive/2006/04/19/425722.aspx I imported the Exchange MBX data collection set http://blogs.technet.com/b/mikelag/archive/2008/05/02/perfwiz-replacement-for-exchange-2007.aspx I tried adding the Database Version bucket counts, but when I start the data collection set they did not show up. Then I decided to make a new data collection set with just the version buckets. Let it run for about 5 minutes. When to view the report its blank. I can watch them in perfmon real time, but they seem to not work in a data collection set. Am I missing something or should I use some other counters to get the version buckets, it would be very helpful to have those counters along with the rest in the MBX.xml file from the site about. I did notice at the time of the issue there was a large RPC delay, then the disk had very little reads/sec, and a very long write per /sec. Also the page file had the same thing going on. Once I'm able to get the version bucket counters to work in the data collection set I should be able to get more info. Any suggestions? Thanks

When are you getting these bucket version alerts? What times?

Andy, Since we have servers all over the global I'm getting all different times. Could be at night or during the morning time and the afternoon, heck even weekends I pull all the reports and couldnt find to many consistancies for the past two months between times and days for all servers. We have a few domains even the other domain which is running on Server 2003 / Exchange 2007 SP1 RU6 gets the alerts too. Right now I'm just trying to focus on the primary domain since that domain is being migrated away from anyways. I've already verified that: DPM is not backup at that time. Maintenance is not schedule at that time. No Scheduled task at that time. P.S. I'm not even seeing an event 623 in the event log, or anything else at the time error wise.

BUMP!! Any reason the version bucket counters would show up blank when running in a Data Collection Set?

GOT IT =) So basically after the 12 hour period when I opened up the blg file it had all the counters but the version buckets. I right click and choose ADD COUNTERS. Went down to the version bucket counters and added them in "AGAIN" and they showed up, might be some bug. Every time I created a data counter set start/stop. Opened I had to manually add the VBucket counters again to get them to show up. Version Buckets Unnessary Calls per/sec - Avg 940, Max 2800 (SCOM generates alerts at >1800 & >2000) After putting a bit more thought into this, Monday I plan to pull the DPM backup schedule for the servers and compare it to the time the alerts are being generated. I have a feeling this is VSS/DPM/Backup related. Any suggestions or tools that can be used to find out "What" is making these unnessary calls into the Version Buckets?

Honestly, the only time I have ever seen Version Bucket alerts is during IS Maintenance and that made sense. During those periods when the alerts fire, can you use Exmon and see if any client is hitting the server especially hard?
